Guthrie routs Guymon for Homecoming win

Bookmark and Share

Perhaps the largest crowd ever inside Jelsma Stadium witness the Guthrie BlueJays strike early and often in a Homecoming rout.

Guthrie’s junior Tre Smith dashed for a 51-yard touchdown score on the first play from scrimmage and the BlueJays never looked back in a 62-0 win over Guymon.

With the district win, Guthrie improves to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in district play. The win marks the 18th straight win for 5A’s top-ranked team. Guymon falls to 0-4 and 0-1.

The win also represents the final game that head coach Rafe Watkins had to sit out following an eight-game suspension handed down by the OSSAA from a year ago. Listen to Watkins address the suspension and the win in his post game radio interview.

Guthrie used 28 first quarter points and 34 more points in the second quarter to seal the deal. Following Homecoming festivities, both teams agreed to a continuous clock in the second half.

Senior Cody Reihs was named the F&M Bank Player of the Game with four catches, including two touchdowns, and 79 yards. Reihs was spotted by senior quarterback Bryan Dutton down the field and the two hooked up with a perfect pass and catch for a 54-yard score. Reihs talks about his perfomance following the game.

Not to be out-done, Smith finished with three touchdown runs of 51, 20 and 1 to finish with 100 rushing yards on nine carries.

Dutton was equally impressive with four passing scores and two rushing scores. Listen to the radio highlights.

The BlueJay defense flexed their defensive muscles by forcing Guymon into two lost fumbles and an interception leading to 20 points. The Tigers ran 38 offensive plays and finished with 31 yards, including negative one rushing. Meanwhile, the Guthrie offense compiled 417 yards of offense with 247 coming via the ground game.

Guthrie travels to Oklahoma City next week and takes on the Western Heights Jets, who are 0-4 on the year.
