As Guthrie students prepare to return to class on August 14, construction crews are putting the final touches on major expansion projects at Cotteral and Charter Oak Elementary Schools. The upgrades are part of the $45 million bond issue approved by voters in August 2024 to address growing student enrollment.
At Cotteral Elementary, the newly constructed parking lot and bus lane will be open and operational by the first day of school.
While most of the playground will not be immediately available, it is expected to be ready within the first week of the school year. Additional features such as basketball goals and tetherball equipment are being installed, and sod is expected to be laid by the end of the week. Part of the play area has been upgraded with artificial turf, made possible by a private donation. The turf will enable students to play even in rainy weather, thereby expanding outdoor play opportunities.
Meanwhile, at Charter Oak Elementary, construction continues on a six-classroom addition. The exterior wallboard has been completed and is being prepared for finishing to match the existing building.
New windows are being installed, and framing for interior walls is progressing quickly. The new classrooms are expected to be finished and ready for students by the start of the spring semester.
These improvements at both schools are designed to alleviate overcrowding and better serve Guthrie’s growing student population.
