Guthrie Public Schools and local basketball supporters are searching for members of the 1956 Class A Guthrie state championship basketball team as the OSSAA prepares to honor milestone championship teams during this year’s state tournaments.
The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association announced plans to recognize teams celebrating their 50th, 60th, 70th, or 80th championship anniversaries during the 2026 Basketball State Tournaments, which will be held March 3–7 and March 10–14 at the new OG&E Coliseum in Oklahoma City. This marks the first year state basketball will be played in the new facility.
Guthrie’s 1956 Class A championship team qualifies for the 70th anniversary recognition. OSSAA officials are hopeful that former players, coaches, or family members can help locate team members interested in attending one of the tournament weekends to be honored on the court.
According to OSSAA, past reunions have brought former teammates back together from across the country, in some cases reuniting players who had not seen each other in decades. Organizers say the recognitions have become meaningful moments for schools and families and may represent one of the last opportunities for entire teams to be together.
Anyone with information on members of the 1956 Guthrie state championship basketball team, or their families, is encouraged to contact Guthrie Public Schools or Guthrie News Page so arrangements can be made with OSSAA.
