Despite missing one of their key components, the Guthrie boys Cross Country team competed well in the 4A/5A 3-mile run at the OSU Cowboy Jamboree last Saturday in Stillwater.
The Jays were without the services of Zack Cates, who was out due to having his wisdom teeth removed. Cates is expected back this week in time for their race at Holland Hall on Saturday.
Guthrie finished the run with three medalists. Junior Jonathan Ogan ran a 17:15 and was good enough for a third place finish, Hunter Sallee was 11th overall in 17:36, and Walker Cross was good enough for 18th with a time of 17:54. Deer Creek’s Taler Buck took the top individual honor with a time of 16:51.
Bishop McGuinness showed why they will be the favorites to win the 5A State meet next month by winning the team championship trophy in comfortable fashion. The Irish finish with 54 points and were followed by Deer Creek (87), Bishop Kelley (163), and Guthrie (176).
Adam Beery and Leroy Watts also competed in the 3-mile run. However, the Jays may have found some help. Coach Clay Tarter found Caleb Murillo and asked him to run in the junior varsity meet. Murillo did, and ran a respectable 18:36 in his first run of the year and finished 20th overall. That time, if he ran in the varsity run, would have been good for 36th place and would have placed the Jays in the top three.
Taylor Self and Kyle Owens competed with Murillo in the race. The Lady Jays were represented by Lauren Toney, who ran he personal best 14:59 in the 3200 meter run.
