The Guthrie Lady Jays softball program is enjoying a 14-4 season record under first year head coach Booker Blakely.
The program secured six out of the seven current shut outs before entering the classrooms on September 4.
Preseason showed there was depth of talent and some great bats on the new team, which has four seniors on the roster. The lone home losses thus far came from Mustang and Carl Albert, who are both coming off state championship seasons.
More importantly than the 14-4 season record is the 8-1 district record, which currently places them second in the standings behind Carl Albert.
Senior Karrah Dean leads the flock with five home runs. Sophomore Addy Awbrey had a solo blast during the El Reno Tournament, in which, Guthrie did not taste defeat in the four games.
Three of the seven shut outs in the circle for the Lady Jays have gone to Karrah Dean, junior Drew Dodgion and freshman Trinity LeGrande.
The season started with a road trip and doubleheader with Guymon.
In game one against the Tigers, the Jays held a 7-0 lead until the bottom of the 5th inning when the Tigers scored all six of their runs. Guthrie answered back and won 9-6.
Dean finished the season with 13 strike outs and allowing two walks.
Dodigon was on the mound for game two and allowed nine hits, seven runs over seven innings and striking out six for a 12-7 victory.
Guthrhie’s first home game ended in defeat from Mustangs with an 8-0 shutout.
Mustang took the lead on a grand slam in the first inning. Dodigon picked up the loss by going two and two-thirds innings, allowing eight runs on ten hits, striking out three and giving up two walks.
Dean was too much for El Reno. She surrendered one run on two hits over five innings and striking out three. Senior Trenda LeGrande collected four hits and leading Guthrie to a 11-1 win over El Reno. The Lady Jays got fired up in the first inning, when senior Zoie Morrison doubled on a 2-0 count, scoring two runs.
Next on the bill was the Shawnee Tournament. Guthrie went 2-2 enduring two one-run losses.
Against Durant, with the game tied 2-2, Durant picked up a double in the sixth inning for the walk off win. The second loss – also coming off a walk off win – came to the hands of Shawnee, despite out-hitting the Lady Wolves 18 -13.
Back to district play, Dodgion didn’t allow a run as the Lady Jays defeated Noble, 14-0. Dodgion lasted five innings, allowing four hits and zero runs while striking out six and walking one.
As the season settles in, the freshmen are showing their worth.
Trinity LeGrande has seized every opportunity on the mound. Eadie Jobe has proved to be a defensive asset and Jules Leach and Elaina Clark helped clinch a win over Woodward 5-4 at home.
Against Woodward, the game was tied at 4-4 with the Lady Jays batting in the bottom of the seventh. After Dean doubled to right field, Woodward intentionally walked two Morrison and Jobe to bring Clark to the plate. Clark hit a grounder and Jules barreled down the line to home as the third baseman throw was offline for Jules to secure the winning run.
Staying hot, freshman Trinity Legrande picked up another shutout on the road. This time at Western Heights in a 16-0 win.
Next was a double header with Del City and two more wins on the home field.
Guthrie knocked in four runs in the fourth on its way to their first victory over the Eagles 7-1.
The Guthrie offense was led by Karlie Huffer and Dean, Dean.
Guthrie was sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error.
Game two was yet another shut out for the bullpen with a score of 13-0. Clark finished 2-2 with three RBI’s, Zoie Morrison and Addy Aubrey had big bats both banking two RBI’s.
Falling to top-ranked Carl Albert on Tuesday, 9-4, Dean took the loss but finished with two home runs and three RBI’s.
