The Guthrie Lady Jays softball program is off to a 5-1 start, including 2-0 in district play, under the direction of second-year head coach Mike Lowe.
The Lady Jays began the season last week in the El Reno Tournament and finished 3-1 with a second place finish. With wins over Northwest Classen (12-0), Mustang JV (4-3) and Enid (4-2), the Lady Jays took on Duncan in the finals.
Duncan, however, was too much as they won the title game 8-3.
On Monday in the home opener against Del City, Guthrie received a dominating pitching performance from Karrah Dean. In the circle, she allowed just one hit while striking out 12 Lady Eagles en route to an 11-0 win.
Dean is off to a 3-0 start.
On Tuesday, Guthrie returned to El Reno. This time for a district game with the Lady Indians resulting in another lop-sided win, 11-1.
Of the four wins against varsity competition, Guthrie’s opponents are a combined 6-22 and are expected to see a bump in competition this week in the Shawnee Tournament. On Thursday, the Jays will play Bethel and follow up on Friday with a doubleheader with Pryor and Durant. The tournament will finish on Saturday with a match up with Claremore.
More importantly, district play will fire back up next week with games against Noble (Monday), Woodward (Tuesday) and Western Heights (Thursday).
