Guthrie takes three of four; unbeaten in district play

The Guthrie softball program remained unbeaten in district play with a road win in Shawnee. The 3-0 district record will be challenged with Deer Creek coming to town.

Prior to Shawnee, the Lady Jays took two of three games in the Perry Fast Pitch Tournament with their last scheduled game against Ponca City washed out due to the rains.

With wins over Shawnee, Frontier and Pawnee, Guthrie stands with a 7-2 overall record to go with the 3-0 district record. The Lady Jays were an inning away from being 8-1, but Mannoford score five unanswered runs for a walk-off win in Perry.

On Monday, Guthrie was on the road for their third straight district game to begin the season and got a pitching gem from Bailey Shaffer.

Shaffer despite allowing eight hits, three base-on-balls and three earned runs, struck out eight Lady Wolves and stayed away from the big inning early on.

Trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning, Guthrie tied the game at 1-1 and then poured it on in the sixth inning with five runs to go up 6-1. Just for extra measure, Guthrie patched two more runs in the seventh to go 8-2.

Shawnee made things a little more interesting with three runs in their final at bat, but Guthrie held on for the 8-5 win.

Chelsea Watson was an impressive 3-4, including a double, and three RBI’s. Equally impressive was McKale Hopfer with her three hits, including a double, and three RBI’s.

Danni Graybeal and Shaffer each added two hits while Madison Sutton, Trista LeGrande and Sam Simpson collected singles.

The Lady Jays will have just their second home game when Deer Creek comes for a 5 p.m. first pitch on Tuesday. The Lady Antlers are coming off a 6-4 loss to Edmond North on Monday and have a 5-3, 1-0 record.

Perry Fast Pitch Tournament

A pitchers dual started the Perry Tournament as Bailey Shaffer squared up against one of the best in the state in her Frontier counterpart. Both offenses managed just seven hits total, but the biggest came in the fourth inning.

Madison Sutton started things by drawing a walk and helped herself to third base with two stolen bases. Sutton then came across for the eventual game winning single by Sam Simpson for the 1-0 win.

All four Guthrie hits were singles: Shaffer, Simpson, Gracynn Smith and Chelsea Watson.

The following day, the Lady Jays held a 4-0 lead in the fourth before the wheels fell off.

Pitcher McKale Hopfer had 4A’s Mannford bats in check for the first three innings, but the Pirates got the sticks going and took advantage of a few fielding miscues.

Danni Graybeal led the offensive charge by going 2-3 with a double. Sutton, Hopfer, Smith, Eryn Richardson and Trista LeGrande each collected a ht.

Later in the day, Guthrie put the loss behind them with a 6-3 win over Pawnee.

LeGrande, a freshmen, made her varsity debut in the circle and took advantage of the opportunity for her first win.

LeGrande had plenty of offensive help with Shaffer leading the charge with two hits, including a double. Graybeal nailed a triple while Richardson collected a single and two RBI’s. Sutton, LeGrande, and Watson also added a hit each.
