The Guthrie volleyball program continues to make strides in its second season, navigating the challenges of competitive play as a young team. While the Jays are currently 0-5, their improvement is evident with each match.

On Thursday, Guthrie hosted Elgin in a conference matchup, winning one of the four sets. The final scores were a 16-25 loss, 25-19 win, 22-25 loss, and 17-25 loss. The junior varsity team secured a victory by taking two out of three sets with scores of 28-26, 22-25, and 15-9. The 9th grade team also delivered a strong performance, winning both sets 25-10 and 25-15.

Earlier in the week, on August 27, Guthrie traveled to Casady to face the Cyclones. Although the high school and junior varsity squads were defeated, the 9th grade team emerged victorious. The high school team fell in three straight sets (17-25, 15-25, 16-25), while the JV team dropped their sets 21-25 and 17-25. The freshmen squad, however, came through with 25-17 and 25-20 wins.

Guthrie, coached by Josh Smith, will next host John Marshall on Thursday, with matches taking place at the Guthrie Junior High School gymnasium. The evening kicks off with the freshmen team at 6 p.m.

The junior high teams are also showing steady improvement. The seventh-grade team currently holds a 4-2 record, while the eighth-grade team is even at 3-3.

Both junior high teams secured wins on the road against Perkins. The seventh graders won their sets 27-25 and 25-13, and the eighth graders took their sets 25-9 and 25-23. In a previous home match against Del City, the Jays dominated, with both teams winning in straight sets—seventh grade (25-6, 25-13) and eighth grade (25-18, 25-17).

The junior high, coached by Aushleana Boykin in their third season as a proram, will be on the road again Tuesday as they travel to Perkins for their next challenge.
