Guthrie Wrestling put up a strong fight at the Class 5A Dual State Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, splitting their matches at the Union Multipurpose Activity Center in Tulsa. The Bluejays secured a dramatic 33-32 victory over McAlester in the quarterfinals before falling to top-seeded and eventual state champion Chickasha, 64-4, in the semifinals.

Guthrie’s opening dual against McAlester was a back-and-forth battle that came down to the final match. The Buffaloes won eight of the 14 matches, but the Bluejays made the most of their opportunities.

At 190 pounds, Roston Uselton got Guthrie on the board with a second-period pin, giving the Jays an early 6-0 lead. After three matches, the score was tied at 6-all before Joel Landry, wrestling at 106 pounds, reversed his opponent in the second period and secured a pin with 54 seconds remaining.

At 120 pounds, Kaedin Herendeen controlled his match, building a 13-3 lead before finishing with a pin in the final 21 seconds. Trailing 23-18 later in the dual, Luke Lyons battled for an 8-5 win, cutting the deficit to 23-21. After a scoreless first period, Lyons took control in the second and carried a 4-1 lead into the final period.

With three matches to go, Guthrie trailed 29-21, but Rowan McHone delivered a clutch first-period pin with just five seconds left, pulling the Jays within two at 29-27. McAlester responded at 165 pounds, as Kenneth Carter held off a rally by Clayton Carey to put the Buffaloes ahead 32-27, setting up a must-win scenario for Guthrie.

With the dual on the line, senior Bryson Hall (37-0) stepped onto the mat knowing only a pin would send Guthrie to the semifinals. He delivered under pressure, securing the fall in just 1:31 and sending the Bluejays into the next round.

Facing top-seeded and undefeated Chickasha in the semifinals, Guthrie found itself outmatched. Hall was the lone Bluejay to secure a victory as Chickasha dominated the dual, allowing just 21 points across three matches—the second-best defensive performance in Class 5A history. Chickasha also set a 5A record by scoring 181 total points in the tournament.

With Dual State behind them, Guthrie now shifts its focus to the Class 5A East Regional, set for Friday and Saturday in Claremore.
