Guthrie Youth Football practices are underway with the season opener set for the end of August. The program has seen a record number of players this year to sign up.
Guthrie Youth Coordinator Seth Robbins says 161 players will fill out the six teams ranging from the first grade to the sixth grade.
The second grade team, which was undefeated a season ago as first graders, has the deepest roster with 33 players. The first grade team comes in with 19 players, third grade with 25, fourth grade with 26, fifth grade at 30 and the sixth grade with 28.
The first day of practices were held on July 27 and beginning this week will practice in full pads.
The teams will host round robin scrimmages on Aug. 14 to be held at the Guthrie High School practice field (behind the high school). The first grade team will challenge the second grade team, who will then scrimmage the third grade team. The third grade team will face off with the fourth grade team, and afterwards take on the fifth grade team. Finally, the fifth grade team will square off with the sixth grade team.
Guthrie will play nine games in the regular season in the Deep Fork Valley league and will conclude the season with a post-season tournament.
