Guthrie’s Luke Morgan wins qualifier for US Junior Amateur Championship

Guthrie High School soon-to-be senior golfer Luke Morgan has won some impressive tournaments in his career, but none came bigger on Monday afternoon.

Morgan fired a four-under 68 to win the Dallas-Fort Worth area qualifier for the United States Junior Amateur Championship win. The impressive field of over 100 of the whose who of youth golfers competed at Hurricane Creek Country Club in Anna, Texas.

Any male amateur who has not reached his 19th birthday and whose USGA Handicap Index does not exceed 4.4 is eligible to enter. Fifty-six sectional qualifiers started on June 10th and finish up on Tuesday.

Morgan will now compete at the 72nd U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at the Inverness Club (Ohio) July 15-20. The event will be televised on The Golf Channel.

A number of prominent players have won the U.S. Junior Amateur, including 15-time major champion Tiger Woods, who captured three consecutive titles from 1991-93. Jordan Spieth, the 2015 U.S. Open champion, is the only other individual to win multiple Junior Amateur titles. Other notable champions include David Duval, Gary Koch, Hunter Mahan, Johnny Miller, Mason Rudolph and Kevin Tway, the son of 1986 PGA champion Bob Tway.

The Guthrie product, who remains unsigned by a college program but additional offers are likely on the horizon, helped lead the Bluejay golf team to back-to-back Class 5A state championships, including an individual state championship this past season.
