Handicap school bus involved in hit and run accident; one man arrested

A man was taken into custody following a hit-and-run accident with a Guthrie handicap school bus on Wednesday morning. The officer, who just went on duty for the day, was travelling on 1st Street when he saw a gray Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck driving in reverse near Vilas St. The officer noticed the school bus and the front end damage of the truck. The officer quickly pulled the truck over at 3rd and Vilas St. just after 7 a.m.

According to a witness, the bus was parked in front of a home loading a student when the truck crashed into the back of the bus. That’s when the truck went into reverse and left the scene.

There were six children on the bus (number 51) at the time of the accident. Luckily, no injuries were reported and minimal damage to the bus. For the truck, which was a rental vehicle with a Texas license plate, suffered front end damage and was towed away.

Following a sobriety test, the driver of the truck, Brian Lee Downing, 45, of Guthrie, was taken into custody for driving under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia and leaving the scene of an accident. He was transported to a nearby hospital for a blood draw. “The Guthrie Police Department would like to remind motorists who choose to operate vehicles while under the influence of alcohol or drugs that when pulled over, you will be arrested and your vehicle will be impounded or seized,” Officer Anthony Gibbs said in a press release. “Driving under the influence is a danger to yourself and others, and it is an action we will not tolerate.”
