Update 9:15 on April 11The chilling 911 calls of an intruder coming into a family’s home in the middle of the night can be found at the bottom of this article.

One person was fatality shot in the early morning hours on Thursday in an apparent home invasion on Guthrie’s east side.

WalnutThe Guthrie Police Department responded to the area of 1000 N. Walnut Court after a homeowner opened fire on an intruder, who had broken into the residence shortly after midnight.

The apparent intruder, who has been identified as Dwight Lewis, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to investigators, a man, woman and their two children were asleep when they suddenly heard banging at the back door near the kitchen. The man retrieved his pistol and loaded the weapon. Once the man walked into the kitchen he found a naked Lewis, 48 of Guthrie, in the house after breaking in the back door.

The homeowner demanded that Lewis either leave or get down, but police say Lewis made a lunge at the man and that is when he fired multiple shots.

Neighbors in the area tell police they heard the banging on the door as well as the shots fired. Investigators believe everything at this time is consistent with their report which will be filed with the Logan County District Attorney’s Office.

At this time police are uncertain why Lewis was in the home and described him as a white man in his 40’s that lived in the area and suffered from mental issues.

The Medical Examiner responded to the scene and an autopsy will be performed.
