Upgrades are currently taking place at Squires Field and Jelsma Stadium, including the installation of a new LED lighting system for the baseball diamond.
Along with lighting, parking will be a touch easier for visiting teams when they come to visit with the addition of parking space.
Guthrie Public Schools last November purchased two lots, which included two houses, east of the right field fence, providing designated parking for visiting buses on game nights, enhancing safety and convenience. Related article: Guthrie Public Schools purchases properties near athletic fields
Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson emphasized the proactive nature of these purchases, stating that the properties were in poor condition and could have posed a long-term challenge if left to other buyers.
“When I originally spoke to the board, the eastern most house was the only one for sale,” Simpson told Guthrie News Page. “Soon afterward, the one closest to us also became available. The purchase of these properties is consistent with our pro-active approach regarding facilities. The properties were not in great shape and we knew if someone else purchased them as rental property it could be a long time before they might become available.”
Regarding the lighting project, Simpson noted that while the district upgraded other facilities to LED technology in 2016, Squires Field remained untouched until now.
The previous lighting system was installed in 1982 and required nearly $20,000 in repairs recently, including three foul balls this past season knocking out lights.
The new lights are expected to reduce maintenance costs and improve reliability.
“We are looking forward to lower operating costs but especially greater reliability and lower maintenance costs,” Simpson added.
A season ago, a new lighting system was added at the softball field.
Future plans include replacing the high school practice and soccer fields and Jelsma Stadium.
