The Guthrie Public Schools Board of Education approved the hiring of Jack Hankins to be the new girls basketball coach at Guthrie High School on Wednesday evening. Hankins replaces Pete Papahronis who recently accepted a similar position at Edmond North High School.
“Coach Hankins has been around success at every stop and we look forward to his leadership with our girls basketball program,” Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson said.
Hankins comes to Guthrie following a three-year stint as an assistant boys basketball coach at Piedmont High School. Prior to his time at Piedmont, Hankins was an assistant boys and girls basketball assistant at Talihina High School in addition to other coaching assignments.
During his five-year stint at Talihina, Hankins learned from head boys and girls coach Chris Gillespie, a 2009 inductee into the Oklahoma Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The 2011 Talihina Boys Basketball team captured the class 2A state championship following runner-up finishes in both 2009 and 2010. Following the 2011 season, Hankins was selected as the Oklahoma Basketball Coaches Association “Assistant Basketball Coach of the Year.”
The Wilburton, OK native is a 2005 graduate of Southeastern Oklahoma State University. His wife Terra will remain in her position as an Elementary Teacher for Piedmont Public Schools for the 2014-15 school year. Hankins brother, Terril is a men’s assistant basketball coach at Oklahoma Christian University under head coach Dan Hays.
