Week 4 and the first week of district play went as expected in Class 5A with winners and losers, and again this week the Jays will be involved in the top game of the district 5A-1.
The Jays used the first half last week to take the air out of the Deer Creek Antlers en route to a 41-7 win. In turn, Guthrie got a key win that may aid in hosting a first round game and perhaps two at Jelsma.
The district champion receives a first round playoff game at home and with a win would host a second round game as well. The district runner-up would than host a first round game, but would be on the road if they were to prevail in the first round. The third and fourth place team will be on the road for the first two weeks as long as they survive. The state semi-finals and championship game are played on neutral sites.
Guthrie along with Ada, Carl Albert, and Deer Creek are projected as the top four teams to move on to the playoffs from 5A-1. In what order? Not sure, but if the Jays were to get their first win on the road this season, in Ada, it is all but certain they will finish in either of the top two spots.
Here is how the 5A-1 looks after Week 4:
School | Dist | All | PF | PA | +/- |
Carl Albert | 1-0 | 3-1 | 136 | 34 | 15 |
Guthrie | 1-0 | 3-1 | 137 | 50 | 15 |
Ada | 1-0 | 2-2 | 131 | 55 | 15 |
El Reno | 1-0 | 2-2 | 97 | 81 | 15 |
Southeast | 0-1 | 3-1 | 97 | 67 | -15 |
Deer Creek | 0-1 | 2-2 | 103 | 101 | -15 |
Noble | 0-1 | 0-3 | 21 | 122 | -15 |
Western Heights | 0-1 | 0-4 | 52 | 169 | -15 |
Here are the games in Week 5 of 5A-2:
Last Week’s Predictions were 3-0
Guthrie (3-1) at Ada (2-2)
The Ada Cougars appear to be a playoff team and that should come at no surprise for the Jays. Guthrie’s first four of five opponents are expected to make the playoffs. The Cougars are rich in tradition and will look to control the ground game and keep the ball out of the hands of the BlueJay balance offense attack.
Prediction: You can listen to the game on 105.1 FM, or on Guthrie Sports Page
El Reno (2-2) at Carl Albert (3-1)
A rematch of last years state semi final game where the Titans controlled the game from the beginning on their way to a 44-7 blowout win. Both teams lost key members to those squads, but more so on the El Reno side.
The Titans appear they are going to be 3-0 in district play heading into week seven’s showdown with Guthrie.
Prediction: Carl Albert 41, El Reno 6
Western Heights (0-4) at Noble (0-3)
The good news is someone is going to get their first win of the season. However, the bad news is the loser of this game may be looking at not winning a game this season. Huge game in Cleveland County.
Prediction: Noble 20, Western Heights 7
Southeat (3-1) at Deer Creek. (2-2)
Southeast was the 31st school in 5A to drop their first game of the season. However, their schedule continues stiffen. The Antlers are looking to get back in the win column and may not be very nice guests when the Spartans visit. Deer Creek wants to get the Guthrie loss behind them and they do.
Prediction: Deer Creek 35, Southeast 7
