Jays erupt for five scores in second quarter to cruise past Guymon

For a few minutes on Friday night, the football state of Oklahoma did a double-take. Everyone was checking to see what they saw or heard was correct. Yes, Guymon held a two-point lead over the defending 5A state champs after one quarter of play.

The Guymon Tigers played their best quarter of football in several seasons and led the BlueJays, 8-6, after the first 12 minutes of action.

However, the game fell into an expected place as the Jays broke off 56-unanswered points en route to a 62-14 win.

The Jays took advantage of not one, not two, but three returned interceptions for touchdowns.

Guthrie improves to 6-0 overall, 3-0 in district play and winners of 20 straight. A much-improved Guymon program falls to 1-5 and 1-2.

The Tigers defense forced the Jays to punt on their first two possession, both three-and-outs, but the Guymon offense helped lead to the game’s first six points when Jalyn Morgan intercepted a pass and darted in for an 18-yard pick six.

It appeared to be the beginning of a rout, but Guymon responded.

Tiger quarterback Aaron Huckins found Cale Purdy for a completed pass and took off of the Jays sideline and breaking a tackle for a 47-yard score. Afterwards, they completed the two-point.

The second quarter proved to be dominant for Guthrie as the offense scored three times and the defense added two more.

The Guthrie offense got going in the quarter with a 79 yard drive that needed six plays. Quarterback Zane Maltz scored from 3-yards out to give the lead back for good.

The second defensive score of the game came just 18 seconds later when linebacker Beau Davis collected his first interception of the season and took off for a 40-yard touchdown score.

Idae Alexander and the offensive line started to get it going as well in the second quarter. Alexander rushed for his two scores of the game with runs of 19 and 3-yards. He finished with a game high 191 yards on the ground on 22 attempts. The 191 rushing yards is his fourth personal best for the year.

Between the Alexander scoring plays was the third interception. This time, it was safety Kelyn Hinds getting his opportunity. Hinds showed his straight ahead speed as he hauled in the 66-yard interception.

Guthrie took the two-point deficit and turned it into a 41-8 halftime lead in the 12-minute second quarter.

On the first play of the third quarter, senior wide receiver L’liott Curry caught a short pass and used his strength and speed to take off down the Jays sideline and eventually into the end zone for a 61-yard score.

The next two Guthrie possession in the quarter needed four plays to reach beyond the goal line. Cal Davis and Ty Doolin finished those drives with scoring runs of 3 and 27-yards, respectively.

Guymon stopped the scoring streak midway through the fourth quarter with a 14-yard run to finish the game’s scoring.

The BlueJays compiled up 345 yards on the slick playing surface, including 248-yards on the ground.

Guymon, who ran 12 more offensive plays than the Jays, managed 49-yards rushing and 75 passing.

Guthrie returns back to Jelsma Stadium on Thursday evening when the take on Western Heights for a 7 p.m. kick.
