Guthrie head football coach Kelly Beeby wanted to see his team play four quarters after struggling in first half games in the first two weeks. The Jays did just that as they took it to the Ponca City Wildcats.
The Bluejays jumped out to a 27-0 halftime lead and cruised in the second half to capture their first win of the season with a 48-0 win over the Wildcats.
Guthrie halts a three game losing skid dating back to 2016.
“(Offensive coaches) set the tone offensively with nice long drives. Coach challenged them to play four quarters,” Beeby said.
Start quick the Jays did.
On their first offensive possession, the Jays went 80 yards on 13 plays to score after a 1-yard run for Gavin Brison.
On their next drive, the Jays got a 21-yard field goal from David Vargas to go up 10-0 with 2:18 left in the first quarter.
The final score of the quarter was again Brison hitting pay dirt. This time from 40-yards out and Guthrie was quickly up 17-0.
With 7:30 left in the second quarter, Brison struck big with an 83-yard touchdown run on first down to send the Jays up by four scores.
Vargas added a season long 43-yard field goal to send the Jays into the locker room.
Brison finished the first half with 11 carries for 142 yards as the Jays piled up 289 yards of offense in the first 24 minutes.
The Guthrie defense was equally impressive by holding the Wildcats to 75 yards of offense, including six yards in the running game.
Overall, the Jays defense forced four turnovers and collected their first shut-out since October 2015 (Southeast 28-0).
The second half was equally as impressive.
The Guthrie defense collected two pick sixes from Brison and David Scott.
Ponca quarterback Justin Andrews was hit by linebacker Donminic Goosby as he attempted to throw the ball, which sent the ball into the air and into the open arms of Scott, who ran it in for a 24-yard touchdown.
Meanwhile, Brison perfectly read the Ponca pass play and stepped in front of the receiver for the interception and was untouched into the end zone.
Between the two defensive scores, quarterback Jackson Waddell found a huge hole up the middle, which Waddell said was a busted play in his post-game radio interview, and scampered in on a 49-yard touchdown.
Waddell finished with 13 carries and 108 yards. Not to be out done, Brison finished with 156 yards on just 14 carries.
The Bluejays have now won seven of the eight meetings in the series with Ponca City dating back to 2010.
Guthrie will take a much need week off and will get set to face Carl Albert on Sept. 22 inside Jelsma Stadium.
