Jays run through non-district schedule unbeaten with 20-3 win over Tuttle

The Guthrie football team was challenged for the first time in the 2023 season with a four-quarter game with Class 4A powerhouse Tuttle.

On the opening drive of the game, Guthrie traveled 70 yards down the field in just nine plays for a touchdown with Blake Doles hauling in a 7-yard reception from quarterback Hayden Calvert.

Despite the extra point missed, the six points would be all the Jays would need for the eventual, 20-3, win.

The Bluejays improved to 4-0 with the Homecoming win, while Tuttle dropped to 2-1. In fact, Guthrie is undefeated (10-0) in Homecoming games under head coach Kelly Beeby.

Guthrie surrendered their first points of the season with a second-quarter 24-yard field goal.

Leading 6-3, Guthrie got back on the scoreboard just before the half. Calvert delivered a well-placed pass into the arms of receiver Nate Benford for a 14-yard touchdown to go up 13-3 with the extra point.

The Bluejays sealed the win midway through the fourth quarter with a Jaylen Harper 4-yard touchdown run. Harper finished the night with a season-high 139 rushing yards on 17 carries. He has now rushed over 100 yards in all four games. Heading into the bye week, Harper is averaging 119 yards per game to go with 11 total touchdowns.

The Bluejay defense continues to dominate opponents. Despite allowing a season-high 152 total yards to Tuttle, Guthrie has allowed only three points in 16 quarters.

Tuttle entered with a trio of running backs led by Brady McAdoo but was held to 74 total rushing yards. In the four non-district games, Guthrie has now held their opponents to minus 26 rushing yards and under 200 yards total.

The Tigers turned the football over four times with two interceptions and two fumbles.

Calvert finished the night with 109 passing yards on 10 of 19 passing.

Guthrie enters the bye week and returns to Jelsma Stadium on Sept. 29 when they play host to Piedmont for a key 5A-2 district match-up.
