Jays split their games in Stillwater Tournament

The Guthrie baseball program was set to take on the big boys of Class 6A with four games in the Stillwater Tournament. However, mother nature had other idea’s.

The BlueJays managed to play two 6A clubs in Enid and Tulsa Union and split those games with a 6-5 win over the Plainsmen and a 12-11 setback to the Redskins.

With the split decision, the third ranked Jays are now 19-4 on the season.

The Jays were set to play Stillwater and Mustang, but were canceled due to wet conditions.

In the first game against Enid, the Plainsmen threw their ace pitcher and he looked the part in the first six innings by allowing just one run on a hand full of hits.

Enid held a 5-1 lead as the Jays went to the plate in the seventh inning needing five runs to win. And five is what they got.

For the third time this season, the Jays rallied in their final at bat to defeat an opponent. This time the Jays won on a walk off wild pitch. Enid did not have any more luck as they lost to Mustang to a walk off base on ball the following day of the tournament. The Broncos scored three runs in their last at bat for the win.

Right-handed pitcher Bryan Dutton remained perfect on the season by collecting his fifth win as he went the distance. After a hiccup in the second inning, he controlled the Enid bats.

Both Dutton, Jacob Chappell and Luke Davis each collected two hits while Chappell brought in two runs

It simply was not one of the best games of the year for the BlueJays, but still yet had a chance to take down the 13th ranked Union Redskins.

Guthrie jumped out 1-0, but Union responded in the first inning with three runs of their own. Then, the flood gates opened.

Union piled on 9 runs in the second inning to go up 12-1. However, as they have all season long, the Jays did not simply mail it in.

The Jays erupted for 7-runs in the fourth inning to pull within four, 8-12.

Due to the 2-hour time limit rule, Guthrie had one more at bat in the fifth inning and needing four runs to tie the Redskins, but fell short by plating just the three-runs.

The BlueJays stranded 9 men on base in the five innings of play.

Dutton and Davis continued their hot hitting on the day with three hits each. Hayden Seifert added two hits and 3-RBI’s and Clint Simek belted a home run and also finished with 3-RBI’s.
