Jim Thorpe Awards honors Brothers as POY

Kentrell Brothers has compiled numerous awards this season for his play on the gridiron both locally and nationally. Monday evening’s Jim Thorpe Awards Presentation, at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, is near the top of accolades for the Guthrie senior play maker.

Brothers, who was surronded by his family, was honored as one of the 2010 Jim Thorpe/The Oklahoman All State Football Team. In addition, he was named the Defensive Player of the Year and becomes the third BlueJay to be honored by the Jim Thorpe Association.

Kye Staley was named Offensive Player of the Year in 2007 and Guthrie head coach Rafe Watkins was named Coach of the Year in 2002.

Brothers joins names such as Daytawion Lowe, Austin Box, Geraldy McCoy, Reggie Smith, Rock Calmus, and R.W. McQuarters as fellow Defensive Players of the Year.

The Jim Thorpe Association began honoring the All Star football team at the 1992 Thorpe Awards banquet.

The Oklahoman’s sports editor, Mike Sherman, and lead columnist, Berry Tramel, along with Oklahoma’s Lieutenant Governor Todd Lamb presented Brothers and the All State team with their honors.

Brothers had 63 catches this past season for a school-record 1,304 yards and 18 TDs to help the BlueJays reach the 5A semifinals for the second straight year. On defense, he had 100 tackles. He finished his career with 160 catches, 3,029 receiving yards, 40 TDs, 285 tackles and 51 sacks.

The Jim Thorpe Association presented Louisiana State University’s Patrick Patterson with the 2010 Thorpe Award. Patterson became the 26th winner in the 24th year of the event. Previous winners Eric Berry (2009) and Antoine Cason (2007) were on hand to present Patterson with his Thorpe statue.

 

The event was attended by many Oklahoma dignitaries including, Governor Mary Fallin and previous Governors Brad Henry and George Nigh, and former Lieutant Governor Jari Askins. KFOR-TV sports director Bob Barry Jr. served as the master of ceremonies.
