After having a week off from game action, the junior high football teams ended their home portion of the season on Tuesday with two wins over the Western Heights.
The seventh grade team was boosted from quarterback and defensive back Kaiden Stevenson, who finished with a combined six touchdowns and two interceptions, as they landed the Jets with a 40-6 win.
The eighth grade Bluejays did not have as much as easy time with the Jets, but controlled the ball game with a 21-0 shut-out victory.
In the seventh grade game, Stevenson picked off a Jets pass to setup his first score with a 5-yard run. On the two-point try, Stevenson hit Ty Biggs to give the home team an 8-0 lead just over two minutes into the game.
Western Heights on their next possession put the football on the turf and Jays defensive lineman Da’von Moore covered up the ball to give it back to the Jays offense and Stevenson.
On fourth down and goal, Stevenson found a gap in the defense and scored from eight yards out. The two-point try was no good following a penalty and the Jays led 14-0 after the first quarter.
After a poor punt by the Jets, the Jays needed two plays to go 38 yards for their next score.
Again, it was Stevenson. This time he scampered through the defense for a 20-yard score to give Guthrie a 20-0 advantage.
Western Heights responded with a 51-yard pass to stop the Guthrie scoring to make it a 20-6 game, but that score stood for only 16 seconds.
Stevenson took the Jets kick off to the house for an 80-yard dash to the end zone. As impressive as the run was, Stevenson had one more to top it.
Leading 26-6, the Jays defense recovered another Jets fumble in the Jays red zone. Three plays later it was Stevenson running by himself for his fourth score with a 93-yard run to give his team a 32-6 lead.
The final score of the game came just before the half. Stevenson spotted Josh Rains for a 39-yard pass. Carson Clift hauled in the two-point pass.
Eighth grade wins with shut-out victory
The Guthrie defense played physical in the 21-0 win over the Jets.
Defensive end Tervae Williams was found often in the Jets backfield as he brought in several tackles and added two sacks.
The Jays offense got going on their first drive, which was sparked by a fake punt by Cale Coffman. A few plays later, Coffman took off for a 56-yard touchdown run along the visitors sideline and into the south end zone. Justin Adams ran in the two-point attempt and the Jays were out to an 8-0 start with 7:49 to play in the first quarter.
The Jays defense forced a three-and-out thanks to a Williams’ sack that gave the Jays offense good field position at their 44-yard line.
Coffman sparked the four play drive with a 31 yard run and was finalized by JD Coonfield’s 2-yard score to give the Jays a 14-0 lead at the half.
The lone second half score came on the legs of Coonfield. This time the quarterback scored from 65 yards out.
The junior high teams will conclude their season on Monday when they travel to Noble. The seventh grade team will get started at 5:30 p.m.
