The seventh and eighth grade football teams finally got to play on their home turf after opening the season with two road games. It was a split a decision.

GuthrieThe seventh grade (3-0) team got a quick score from quarterback Jackson Waddell and eventually holding off McGuinness for a 12-8 win. In the nightcap, the eighth grade team (1-2) had a hard time getting things going offensively as they dropped their contest 27-0 to the Irish.

On the seventh grade’s second play from on their opening drive, Jackson cut back to his left and found a wide open field as he sprinted past the defense for a 36-yard touchdown score. The two-point attempt was no good.

The Irish struck back in the early parts of the second quarter with a quarterback score of their own. McGuinness’ McDonald scored from two yards out and was followed up by a two-point conversion to give the Irish an 8-6 lead.

On the ensuing drive, Guthrie needed 9 plays to go 60 yards for what turned out as the final score of the game.

Jackson lofted up a 14-yard fade to a tall Seth Hurd for the touchdown. Again, the two-point attempt was no good, but the defense held true in the second half for the win.

Irish strong in second quarter

McGuinness got an 85-yard kick return, a 42-yard scoop and score and a 23-yard touchdown run to open up what was a scoreless first quarter. Before the Jays could shake off the scores it was 20-0 at the break.

The Irish added one more score in the final quarter.

Both teams will be back in action when they travel to Noble on Sept. 26 before returning home on Oct. 3.
