Junior High football wins season finale; combine for 13-2 season record

In the season finale for both the Guthrie junior high football team, the outcomes were quickly decided as the BlueJays end their season on high notes with wins over Western Heights.

The seventh grade team (5-2) got three touchdown runs from Cale Coffman, including a game opening kick-off return, to defeat the Jets 26-6. The eighth grade team (8-0) finished their two-year careers with a perfect 16-0 season with a 30-0 shutout win.

In the first game inside Jelsma Stadium, the seventh grade team was on the board in the first 15 seconds when Coffman dashed into the north end zone with a 74-yard kickoff return.and a two-point conversion from running back Hector Goosby.

The Jets offense were forced to a 3-and-out on their opening drive to set up the next Jays score.

Again, it was Coffman on the first play from scrimmage. This time took off for a 42-yard score on near the sideline. The point after was no good and just 2:13 into the game the Jays held a 14-0 lead.

On their next possession, Guthrie needed just three plays to increase the score, 20-0. The highlight of the series was a 44-yard pass from Coffman to Bo Robbins down to the 3-yard line. The drive was capped off by Goosby’s 3-yard run.

Coffman finished the Jays scoring with a 41-yard touchdown run.

On the three offensive touchdown, the Jays ran just six plays.

The second game was much like the same as the eighth grade BlueJays held a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.

Quarterback Jackson Waddell scored on a 24-yard run and followed it up with a 2-point conversion to give the Jays an 8-0 lead.

On the final play of the opening quarter, Marcellus Owens hauled in a Waddell pass and darted into the end zone for an 80-yard score. Waddell scored the 2-point conversion to go up 16-0 and would also proved to be the halftime score.

In the third quarter, Waddell got loose for a 35-yard touchdown run to increase the lead 22-0.

Less than 90 seconds later, Waddell hit pay dirt again This time on defense.

Waddell took away the would be Jets pass for a 50-yard pick six. David Scott ran in the two-point conversion to finish the scoring.
