Junior High teams off to 2-2 start of the season

The Guthrie Junior High football teams were greeted to a three game home stand to begin the season.

In the third game of the season, the seventh grade team scored the game-winning touchdown with less than two minutes to play. Quarterback Josh Ricardo scampered in from 10-yards out to give the Jays a 14-8 win over El Reno.

Guthrie’s first score came from running back DeAndre Jones when he ran in from 35-yards out and turned around and scored the two-point attempt.

All three scores of the game came after a scoreless halftime.

The previous week against Ponca City, the Jays scored in each of the four quarters for a 28-6 win.

Ricardo scores the game’s first touchdown with a 12-yard run.

The Wildcats scored the next score, but then watched the Jays score the next 22 points of the game.

Ricardo added two touchdown runs while throwing a touchdown score to TJ Kelly.

Eighth grade team splits home games

The last two games proved to be a split for the eighth grade team. The Jays dropped a 30-22 decision to El Reno, but responded with by pitching a shut-out over Ponca City 22-0.

Quarterback Kaiden Stevenson had a hand in all three scores for the Jays against El Reno.

Stevenson put the Jays on the board with a 5-yard run to pull the Jays within two points, 8-6.

Guthrie trailed 16-6 halftime, but needed just four plays to score in the third quarter. Majority of the yards came on the touchdown pass from Stevenson to Zayn Haynes. Running back Josh Rains scored the two-point conversion to make it a 16-14 game.

El Reno scored to increase the lead 22-14, but Stevenson went back to the air and spotted Carson Clift for an 8-yard score to cap off a 91-yard drive. Stevenson ran in for the 2-point conversion to tie the game at 22-al.

The Indians scored with only 39 seconds left with a 10-yard run to sneak away with the win.

Against Ponca City, Stevenson started the game with an interception and ended the game with an interception.

Rains showed his toughness with a grueling 16-yard run to give the Jays an early 8-0 lead with the two-point conversion by Stevenson.

Haynes got into the end zone on a 1-yard run. The score was set up when Stevenson tipped a Wildcat pass into the air and into the arms of Nathan Bryan.

With a 16-0 lead at the half, Stevenson scored the lone second half score with a 10-yard run.

Both junior high teams are 2-2 on the season with both teams losing last week in Shawnee. Both teams return to action on Thursday when they travel to Chickasha.
