The Guthrie Lady Jays softball team received a huge start and a dramatic finish to their opening game of the Class 5A regional from freshmen Karrah Dean.
Dean powered Guthrie at the plate and in the circle Wednesday, willing Guthrie past Shawnee 6-4 at the Lawton MacArthur regional.
With the win, Guthrie will turn around and play host Lawton MacArthur at 6 p.m. in the winner’s bracket.
Sophomore Hannah Dean picked up the win in the circle by pitching six innings.
Karrah Dean racked up three RBIs on one hit for the Lady Jays as she homered in the first inning.
Karrah Dean was in control on the rubber when called upon in the seventh inning to end a late Shawnee rally. She held Shawnee hitless over the inning, including striking out two for the save.
In the top of the first, Shawnee grabbed the early lead, 2-0. Alexis Freeman got things going for Shawnee with a double. A groundout by Logan Bonner then moved Freeman from second to third. Tiara Blackshire singled, scoring Freeman. Shawnee then tacked on more runs when Haddox scored on a groundout by Jaynna Strong.
Guthrie grabbed the lead for good (3-2) in the home half of the first with Karrah Dean’s round tripper.
Guthrie piled on two more runs in the bottom of the second. A wild pitch scored Lauren Waddell to get Guthrie on the board in the inning.
After pushing across one run in the top of the fifth, Shawnee faced a 6-3 deficit. A groundout by Bonner sparked Shawnee’s rally. Finally, Hannah Dean got Blackshire to strike out to end the threat.
One run in the top of the seventh helped Shawnee close its deficit to 6-4. A solo home run by Freeman gave Shawnee life.
