Kentrell Brothers is preparing for his final season on the gridiron for the Missouri Tigers and will enter the season as one of the nation’s top prospects for next year’s NFL draft. On Tuesday, he was named to the 2015 pre-season Bednarik Award watch list.
The Guthrie High School alum is Missouri’s lone representative on the Bednarik Award watch list, given to the nation’s top defensive player. The award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1995.
Brothers, who started all 14 games a season ago and was an All-SEC Second Team pick by the Associated Press, is the Southeastern Conference top returning tackler from a season ago with 122 stops.
Semifinalists for the award will be announced Nov. 2, and the three finalists will be revealed on Nov. 23. The winner will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show, Dec. 10.
One Missouri website that follows the Tigers says, “This season has the potential to be a special one for Brothers, as he transitions to a revamped defense that will put more focus on active linebacker play.”
As a Bluejay, Brothers was named the Defensive Player of the Year by The Oklahoman in 2011. Brothers caught 63 passes for 1,304 yards, 18 touchdowns and finished his three-year career with 156 receptions for 2,984 yards and 44 touchdowns.
On defense in his senior season, he packed on 100 tackles and 19 sacks
Brothers is the all-time leading receiver in Guthrie history for both a season and in a career, among other numerous GHS records.
