Lady Jays, Dement claim conference championship in a big way

For the first time since 2003, the Guthrie Lady Jays cross country team won the conference championship and they did it in dominating fashion.

Guthrie finished 1-2-3 in the 5k race held at Carl Albert Middle School on Tuesday afternoon. To add to the dominance the top five runners for the Lady Jays finished in the top 15.

Leading the way was sophomore Mercy Dement as she crossed the finish line as the individual conference champion with a time of 20:23.

Fellow sophomore Tori Wells came in 23 seconds later to finish in second place.

Junior Allie Guggisberg took third with a time of 20:53.

Sophomore Sierra Warner finished in 12th place and junior Denae Davenport claimed a medal by crossing the line in 15th place.

Just outside of the medal placing was Lauryn Downs, who finished 18th overall.

Guthrie finished with a team low 33 points and was followed up by Carl Albert (67) and Shawnee (68).

Bluejays finish third

From the beginning to the end, the varsity boys conference run was competitive with four runners running beside each other. It may be a good preview of the upcoming Class 5A state run.

In the end, Noble’s Calvin Allen was able to edge out Carl Albert’s Camden Shaw and Guthrie’s Trevor Sallee to win the conference championship. Sallee, a sophomore, finished with a time of 16:31.03.

A total of six seconds separated the top three runners.

Senior Rodrigo Solis represented himself nicely with a 10th place finish and a time of 17:26.81.

Piedmont ran away with the team title with a low score of 41, but was followed closely by Carl Albert (44). Guthrie took third with 89 team points.

Junior High boys finish fourth

Despite a fourth place finish, the Guthrie junior high team finished with two runners in the top 10.

Grant Mayer led the way for the Jays with a sixth place finish and a time of 12:15. Dawson Sallee finished 10th just 12 seconds later.

Piedmont’s Tanner Bailey dominated the race and finished 29 seconds before the second runner could. He helped the Wildcats to the team victory.

Guthrie’s Mason Mayer, who competed in his first conference race, finished 19th overall and was the second sixth grader to finish.

Cale Evans captured 21st place and was the fifth seventh grader to cross the line.

Junior High girls

The junior high girls team saw Caitlyn Pollard finish 15th overall, Elina Willis 17th and Josie Throckmorton finishing in 19th place.
