Lady Jays fall short to Blackwell in non-district game

The Guthrie High School softball team had a busy weekend with four games in two days as they returned home for the second time on the young season on Monday as they hosted Blackwell.

Guthrie jumped out to a 1-0 lead only to see Blackwell score the game’s last two runs.

In the second inning, Jays sophomore catcher Taylor Bolding reached on an error and later Emma Christian, who was running for Bolding, scored the lone Lady Jays run after two ground balls.

Blackwell tied the game in the third with a solo blast from the Maroons catcher. The towering shot hit the south wind and was parked over the left field wall. Moments later, with runners on first and third, a double steal resulted in the game’s final run.

Although, Guthrie appeared to be business in the sixth inning.

After a leadoff walk from Hannah Dean, sophomore Trenda LeGrande roped what looked like an extra base hit to right-centerfield, the Maroons second baseman stretched above her head to pull  in the catch but saw and was able to double off Dean at first base.

Despite getting the leadoff runner on base in the seventh, Guthrie weny down in order to send them to a 7-3 overall record.

Blackwell, a Class 4A school, improved to 10-5.

The Lady Jays were without Karrah Dean, who missed another game due to a foot injury. She’s expected to return as early as next week.
