For the fifth consecutive season, the Guthrie High School softball team is headed back to Oklahoma City for the Class 5A state tournament.
The Lady Jays secured their latest regional championship on their home field after a long day of elimination games.
Following an early 5-0 loss to Noble on Wednesday, Guthrie was forced to win three straight games to keep their season alive on Thursday — and they did just that.
Athletic Director Jon Chappell, noticing some players relaxing before the day began, told them to get ready because they would be there “all day.”
He was right.
Guthrie opened with a 12-0 win over Western Heights, followed with a 10-4 win over Noble, and then capped the day with a dominant 10-0 victory over Noble in the deciding game.
When the final out was caught in the outfield, the team rushed to the pitcher’s circle to celebrate another trip to the state tournament.
Now 16-13 on the season, Guthrie will face the top-seeded Pryor Tigers (29-4) in the first round. The two teams met earlier this year on August 12, with Pryor winning 6-1.
The game is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at Devon Park (formerly Hall of Fame Stadium) on Field 2.
Other first-round matchups include Elgin vs. Carl Albert at noon, Duncan vs. Claremore at 2 p.m., and Coweta vs. Tahlequah at 4 p.m.
The Guthrie-Pryor winner will advance to face the Elgin–Carl Albert winner at 11 a.m. Friday, with the other semifinal at 1:30 p.m. The 5A state championship game is set for 4 p.m. Saturday on the main field.
All games will be streamed live on the NFHS Network.
