Langston City’s 2016 Veterans Day Week-end Celebration

All veterans and the public are invited to join the Town of Langston City in a salute to U.S. Veterans beginning Friday, November 11. This is the third annual Veterans Appreciation Program hosted by Langston City, Langston University, the Langston Senior Citizens Nutrition Site, The New Hope Baptist Church and the Beta Phi Beta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.  Each year the events have increased in attendance and memorabilia presentations.  his year’s program will include the following events and activities.

Friday, November 11

9 a.m. – City of Langston staff, Veterans, family members, residents and students will place US flags on Veterans graves at Beulah Land Cemetery

10 a.m. — Baptist Student Union open for informal reception: coffee and chit chat

Noon — Langston University (LU) Student Veterans of America (SVA) will hold a Flagpole Ceremony at the Langston University Student Success Center.

12:30 p.m. – Luncheon in Appreciation and Acknowledgements of Service to our Nation—A time for LU and local school students to meet, mix and mingle with our outstanding Veterans. An Art Competition for school has been arranged and will be judged at the luncheon by veterans in attendance.

Rest of the Afternoon – Visits to the Wm Conrad Veterans Memorial Garden Project 313 E. Turner Street Langston.

Saturday, November 12

Noon – “Lunch with Our Veterans” — Veterans from surrounding towns including Langston, Coyle, Meridian, Guthrie, Stillwater, Perkins, Cushing, etc., their families, friends, residents of these locales and our government representatives are invited to attend at the Housing Authority (M&M) Building.

This event will continue the very successful and inspirational Breakfast which was co-sponsored last year by US Veteran Fred Gragg of Bartlesville and the Langston Senior Citizens’ Nutrition Program. There will be no charge for veterans.  Donations are requested from all other attendees. All donations will be given to the on-going development of the Wm Conrad Veterans Memorial Garden project.

Sunday, November 13

11 a.m. – Third annual Veterans Appreciation Worship Service sponsored by New Hope Missionary Baptist Church: Theme “God Bless America’s Veterans.” In addition to a sermon by a U.S. Veteran Rev. Anthony Davis (a member of the Shelton Family who is returning home from Texas for this event) there will be patriotic songs, recognition of the oldest, youngest, highest ranking and all female veterans in attendance. Langston’s Mayor Alicia Sumlin will also make special presentations.

1:30 – 3:00 p.m. An Appreciation Lunch and Fellowship will be co-sponsored by Beta Phi Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc and New Hope Baptist Church which will include group photographs, ceremonial cake cutting, development of a roster/directory, and selection of a committee for planning future Veterans Day events. Please contact Dr. Alberta Mayberry (agjm58@yahoo.com) or Mayor Alicia Sumlin at Langston City Hall 405-466-2271 for further information.
