Langston University has begun a sweeping infrastructure overhaul across its Langston, Oklahoma City, and Tulsa campuses, investing millions in critical upgrades to improve the student and faculty experience without passing the cost onto students.

Major projects underway include comprehensive heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system replacements in both residential and academic buildings, elevator modernizations, and the restoration of the Oklahoma City Campus following storm damage. The university also plans to enhance fire suppression systems across all locations.

“These summer projects were made possible through the use of grants and OCAMP funds allocated by the state, coupled with months of planning, preparation, and project management,” said Theresa Powell, Vice President for Operations.

The largest investment—nearly $9 million—is going toward residential HVAC upgrades, including a full system replacement in Centennial Court Apartments, often referred to as Freshman Village. Other residence halls and faculty housing, such as Cimarron Gardens and the Scholars’ Inn, are also receiving modern HVAC systems.

Academic facilities such as Moore Hall, Sanford Hall, Jones Hall, and the G. Lamar Harrison Library are also receiving HVAC updates. Temporary chillers are being used until permanent systems are installed. Elevator modernization in Sanford Hall and significant repairs to the Oklahoma City Campus, damaged in a 2024 storm, are also underway.

The upgrades are being funded through a combination of Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds (HEERF), Title III federal grants, and Oklahoma Capital Asset Management and Protection (OCAMP) funds. Institutional funds will only be used where necessary.

President Dr. Ruth Ray Jackson praised the collaboration between the university and the state. “We’re extremely appreciative of the Oklahoma Legislature, including Gov. Stitt and notably Sen. Chuck Hall, for the ongoing investments they’ve made to address deferred maintenance needs at institutions throughout the state,” she said.

The improvements are part of Langston University’s long-term strategy to modernize its facilities and create a better learning environment for all.
