Langston University will hold a memorial service in honor of Darryl Mason, assistant football coach and offensive coordinator for the Lions, on Saturday, Aug. 24, at 8:30 p.m. in W.E. Anderson Stadium.
The Langston University community has mourned Mason deeply since his passing on Aug. 17. Having joined the Lions Football coaching staff in 2014, Mason was a valued and beloved member of the campus community, admired by countless students, faculty, and staff.
The Langston University Department of Athletics expressed their shock and sadness at the loss of Mason, who was 63 years old.
“The loss of Coach Darryl Mason has left a huge hole in the hearts of his student-athletes, coaching staff, campus, and the football community,” said Langston University Director of Athletics Donnita Rogers. “His passion for the game, work ethic, loyalty, sense of humor, and love for Langston University will always be treasured and a part of his legacy.”
Langston University head football coach Quinton Morgan also paid tribute: “Coach Mason, you will forever be loved and missed. I couldn’t be prouder to have had you by my side, both on and off the field. Your impact on our lives is immeasurable, and your legacy will continue to inspire us all.”
Mason served as offensive coordinator for the Lions football program twice, first from 2013 to 2015, before returning to the team in 2018. In his first season back, he directed an offense that ranked in the top 10 in several statistical categories, including total offense (third), pass offense per game (fifth), scoring offense per game (seventh), and total pass offense (eighth). During his second tenure, the Lions achieved a 38-18 win-loss record and produced multiple All-American and All-Conference selections, along with other accolades.
Mason’s nearly four-decade-long coaching career included stints at several universities across the country, as well as a notable playing career at Arkansas under Hall of Fame coach Lou Holtz. As a three-year starter at tight end, Mason contributed to four consecutive bowl appearances, including the 1979 Fiesta Bowl and 1980 Sugar Bowl. He also served as captain during his senior year and received the Gordon Campbell Senior Spirit Award.
Saturday’s memorial service will offer the Langston community an opportunity to honor Coach Mason’s memory and grieve his loss together. The service will begin at 8:30 p.m., with the stadium opening at 8 p.m. Counseling services will be available for students during the service.
