Large crowd watches Guthrie rally past Carl Albert in home opener

The Guthrie Lady Jays continued their winning streak with a 6-3 victory over Carl Albert in their home opener on Monday.

With the win, the Lady Jays extended their streak to five games, improving to 6-3, while Carl Albert dropped to 2-2. The game drew a large crowd for the non-district 5A showdown. Related article: Guthrie dominates Norman Tournament with four convincing wins; home game on Monday

Carl Albert struck first with a two-run homer in the opening inning, but Guthrie quickly responded.

Senior Haley Gallo’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first brought sophomore Ryn McCormick home, cutting the lead in half. In the second inning, Savannah Ingle’s fielder’s choice tied the game at 2-all.

After Carl Albert regained the lead with an RBI single in the third inning, Gallo powered Guthrie back ahead with a two-run blast over the left-field wall. The round-tripper is her third of the season. The Titans, wary of Gallo’s bat, intentionally walked her twice in her final two at-bats, but the damage was already done.

McCormick shined at the plate with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, adding to her impressive batting average of .588. Seniors Ava Hebeensperger and Kinley Duehning each added two hits. In their final at-bat in the sixth, Hebeensperger singled in the sixth inning to plate McCormick, while Duehning helped bring in Gallo on a ground ball for two additional insurance runs.

Duehning, who improved her record to 4-0, pitched seven innings, allowing six hits and three runs while striking out two.

The Lady Jays now turn their attention to their first district games of the season against MacArthur in Lawton on Thursday.
