Large turnout expected for 2nd annual Clay Tarter Memorial Invitational

With six weeks still to go, excitement is building as the 2nd Annual Clay Tarter Memorial Invitational.

Races are set for Friday, September 6th, at Cottonwood Flats, where around 750 young runners will take to the course in what promises to be an unforgettable event.

The event has already grown with the middle school meet already reaching capacity, drawing an impressive 25 schools—10 more than last year.

Tarter, an Oklahoma running coach icon and the coach to begin the program in Guthrie, passed away in June 2022.

“We are very excited to bring Guthrie Cross Country back to Cottonwood Flats,” head coach Bryce Balenseifen said. “We believe that this meet will be a great way to honor Coach Clay Tarter for who he was and what he did for this program.”

With about 750 runners expected, the morning races promise to be a lively and competitive day at Cottonwood Flats.

Last year’s inaugural event saw the coaches, Guthrie athletic department, volunteers, and the City of Guthrie dedicating countless hours to organizing a successful run featuring schools from across the state. This year, they are building on that success with even more participants and excitement.

The schedule for the event is as follows:

  • 8:00 – 8:30 am: Packet pick-up
  • 8:40 am: Varsity girls (1.5 miles)
  • 9:05 am: Varsity boys (1.5 miles)
