For the second week in a row, when the Guthrie Bluejay offense needed a late fourth quarter drive – they delivered. On Friday night, it came when they were trailing with less than three minutes to play.
Associate Head Coach Scott Mick inserted “Wolf’ back into the offensive playback this week and with the game on the line the Jays delivered the game winning score to defeat Shawnee 29-26.
From the Shawnee 16-yard line, senior running back Ty Doolin took a wildcat snap and appeared to run a stretch play along on the left side of the line scrimmage, but then tossed it to Jays quarterback Jackson Waddell, who lined up as receiver. Waddell dropped the perfect pass into the waiting arms of Isaac Lewis for the Jays eventual game-winning score.
“Coach dialed up a great play,” head coach Kelly Beeby said in his post game radio interview.
With the victory, Guthrie has now won six of the last seven meetings in the series.
Jim Thorpe Stadium was packed for the Shawnee season opener for a game that went over three hours to play. One of the factors for the long game was the combined 24 accepted penalties (12 each) for 232 yards.
The Jays defense, once again, showed great endurance late in the game and held Shawnee to just 30 yards rushing, including negative rushing yards in the first half.
Guthrie (1-0) jumped out to a 6-0 lead on their second offensive series after the Jays defense held Shawnee to a three-and-out. Senior Cal Davis bulldozed his way into the end zone from 1-yard out. The extra point was no good.
Shawnee (0-1) tied the game with the first play of the second quarter with a 27-yard pass connection from Jack Diamond to Tyree York. The extra point was also no good.
Following a 33-yard field goal from David Vargas, the Guthrie defense on back-to-back series intercepted Diamond for two touchdowns.
Sophomore Blake Curtin intercepted the first pick-six for a 40-yard score only to see Terrance Bibbs do it for a 51-yard touchdown. With the two scores, Guthrie led 22-6 with 5:13 left in the second quarter.
The Guthrie defense finished the night forcing six turnovers, including three interceptions, from the Wolves.
However, as expected, Shawnee made a comeback.
Shawnee returned a Guthrie fumble for a 38-yard scoop and score and then tossed two scores in from 58 and 41 yards to take a 26-22 lead with 4:17 to play in the game.
Guthrie’s game winning drive was setup nicely when Waddell found sophomore wide receiver Marcellus Owens for 39 yards down to the 20-yard line. The winning score came two plays later.
The Jays offense finished with 238 total yards, including Doolin finishing with 29 carries for 133 yards.
Guthrie concluded non-district play next week when they travel and take on the 0-2 Ponca City Wildcats.
