The Logan County GOP and First Capitol Republican Women will conduct a joint meeting on May 10 and will also host a state superintendent candidate forum with State School Superintendent Janet Barresi and Joy Hofmeister.
“We appreciate these opportunities for both groups to bring you educational meetings and forums to Logan County and Guthrie. We have two candidates for the State School Superintendent race coming for a candidate forum. We will be getting to know Joy Hofmeister and the current State School Superintendent Janet Barresi,” a spokesperson said.
The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. at the American Legion, 123 N. 1st St. in Guthrie.
Charlie Meadows will be the candidate forum moderator.
Biography for Superintendent Janet Barresi:
Janet Barresi took office as the Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction in January 2011. She is the state’s first new superintendent in 20 years.
Since taking office she has championed several educational reform initiatives including the release of the first statewide A-F Report Card in the fall of 2012 and continues to be a staunch proponent of more rigorous college and career ready standards and assessments.
A retired dentist, she established Oklahoma’s first charter school, Independence Charter Middle School, in 2000. The school now serves 350 students and has a waiting list each year.
Janet also founded and is the former board President of Harding Charter Preparatory High School. Focused on serving 400 inner-city high school students, Harding offers a diverse student population a rigorous college preparatory curriculum. The school has been ranked No. 23 among the nation’s top 50 high schools, according to TheBestSchools.org and No. 89 in the country according to U.S. News and World Reports’ list of the Best High Schools and No.1 in Oklahoma according to U.S. News as well.
She has a bachelor’s degree in Education, a master’s degree in Speech and Language Disorders and a doctoral degree in Dentistry.
Biography for Joy Hofmeister:
A former public school teacher and businesswoman, Joy Hofmeister has devoted her life to teaching students and promoting higher student achievement.
Joy was appointed to the Oklahoma State Board of Education by Gov. Mary Fallin in January 2012 where she served through two legislative sessions.
She has spent the past 14 years operating Kumon Math & Reading Centers which works through parent partnerships to ensure higher academic achievement for children. Leading a staff of 40, Joy serves 750 students from public, private, charter and home schools.
Joy’s students continue to rank in the top 1% of student achievement within Kumon’s 2000+ centers in North America.
Joy graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Texas Christian University. She holds teaching certificates in English and Elementary Education. Joy has actively participated in the Trends in International Math and Science Study research testing. She is earning her Master’s Degree in Education Administration with a specialty in Education Policy and Law from the University of Oklahoma.
Joy served as an officer for the Jenks Public Schools Foundation Board of Directors, the Select Committee for the Study of School Finance, and various other committees within the Jenks Public School District, as well as other civic and professional committees.
Joy has over 19 years experience working with Special Education teams, parent advocates, and students on Individualized Education Plans.
Joy and her husband have been married nearly 30 years and have four children who all attended Jenks Public Schools K through 12. Her youngest son graduates high school in May 2014.
Joy resigned from the Oklahoma State Board of Education in April 2013 to seek the office of State Superintendent of Public Instruction, an election that occurs on June 24, 2014.
Over 20 Republican legislators in the State Senate and State House have endorsed Joy and joined her Legislative Steering Committee. More than half serve in leadership positions and eight members serve on House and Senate Education Committees.
