Logan County Young Marines held a graduation and promotion ceremony, Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at the American Legion LeBron Post 58 in Guthrie. Four members of the unit graduated from “Boot Camp” following over 26 hours of instruction in such areas as first aid, drill and ceremony, physical fitness and teambuilding.
The graduates included: Kendall Griffin, Payton Heird, Sean Heird and Allyn Orndorff. Additionally, five members were promoted: Tyler Bennett and Jacob Jones promoted to Corporal; and Christian Pacheco, DeMarcus Thompson and Garret Wellden promoted to Private First Class (PFC). These promotions reflect the completion of significant training and retention of specific skills vital to leadership and personal commitment to the team and the unit.
The Young Marines program is a youth education and service program for boys and girls ages 8 through 18 and promotes a healthy, drug free life style. The only requirement for enrollment is good standing at school. Brian Orndorff, the unit Commander, points out the program focus; “Character building, leadership, teamwork and discipline are just a few of the skills that we hope to develop in these boys and girls.” A review of the weekly topics reflects activities in marksmanship, first aid, public speaking, drug awareness and physical fitness.
Logan County Young Marines currently have 21 youth members and 8 adult mentors. In addition to its focus on the development of boys and girls in areas of leadership, teamwork and discipline, the unit has been recognized for its volunteer efforts by receiving the President’s Volunteer Service Award on May 19, 2012.
The unit meets every Wednesday evening from 6-8:30PM at the American Legion Post 58 in Guthrie. For more information please contact the Post (282-2589) or Erin Jones (243-7035)
