Luke Morgan wins Player of the Year; Bo Robbins finishes runner-up

Guthrie golfers Luke Morgan and Bo Robbins, both about to start their freshmen year at Guthrie High School, recently wrapped up their South Central Junior PGA 14-15 year old boys season by competing in The Walter Hopper Tour Championship held August 1-2 at Forest Ridge Golf Club in Broken Arrow.

Morgan opened the tournament with a 2-over par (73) that consisted of three birdies and five bogeys, which left him in a tie for first with Jack Wilkins of Tulsa.

Robbins also opened the tournament with three birdies, then had a bit of a rough patch on the back 9 finishing with a 78 that left him alone in 9th in the field of 33.

On day two of the Championship, playing with Matthew McClintock of Oklahoma City and Dongsoo Lee of Fayetteville, Robbins scratched out a 79, which allowed him to climb two spots to finish in seventh place finishing the two-day event with a 157 total.

Playing in the final group of the day, Morgan got off to a hot start at -1 thru the first eight holes before making a double-bogey at the long par-4 9th hole.  Morgan then reeled off five consecutive pars, before bogeying 15, 16, 17.  Standing on the par 5 18th, with a slim 1-shot margin over Parker Rose of Stigler, Morgan went for broke and ended up making an eagle to close the door on his second consecutive +2 (73), giving him a two-day total of 146, good enough for a 3-shot victory over Rose.

With the win, which was his eighth in 12 starts on the tour, Morgan wrapped up the 2016 SCPGA Junior Player of The Year with 11,388 points.  Morgan never finished lower than fourth place in any SCPGA event and ended the season with a stroke average of 72.4 strokes per round. Robbins came into the Championship in third place overall needing a Top seven finish to move into second place. By virtue of finishing exactly seventh, he was able to finish runner-up to Morgan in the points race with 9,383 points.
