Major (retired) Vicki L. Jones will be inducted into the Oklahoma Officers Candidate School Hall of Fame. The induction will be held as part of the Oklahoma National Guard Officer Candidate School Class 63 graduation.
The ceremony will be on September 9 at 1 p.m.
Major Jones has the distinction of being the first female Oklahoma National Guard member to graduate from the U.S. Army flight school at Fort Rucker, Alabama. She was also the first Native American female to graduate from that school.
She piloted the UH-1 Huey helicopter for many years during her career and retired as a U.S. Senior Army Aviator.
In 2011 Major Jones was selected as the Oklahoma Women Veteran of the Year. She was also the model for a painting by Native American Artist Kelly Haney, former State Senator and Chief of the Seminole Tribe of Oklahoma.
The painting entitled “Heritage of Valor” which depicts a Native American women preparing to defend the homeland.
Major Jones is a member of the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe and the Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma.
The original of this painting is displayed in the Native American Warrior alcove at the 45th Infantry Division Museum in Oklahoma City. A print of the painting is displayed at the Women In Military Service to America memorial in Washington, DC.
Vicki is married to Lieutenant Colonel (retired) Paul Jones. She has one son, Samuel, and three step children.
