With Labor Day weekend coming up this weekend many are planning their annual vacations, but for a Guthrie family they will once again be rallying behind the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s telethon.
Guthrie’s six-year-old Elijah Robles, the son of Heather Yost and Juan Robles, was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy III in September 2010. SMA is a genetic disorder that affects the control of muscle movement. It is caused by a loss of specialized nerve cells in the spinal cord and the part of the brain that is connected to the spinal cord.
On Thursday evening Elijah, along with his mother, sister Eden and grandparents Bennie and Christy Barker, attended the premier event in Oklahoma City near the Oklahoma River. The event was for the families and sponsors as they get set for the MDA telethon, where families, celebrities and musical artists come together to find lifesaving treatments and cures.
Yost was put on the spot when she was asked to introduce and talk about Elijah. She shared that Elijah goes to the MDA clinic in OKC for treatments and for the first time this past summer was able to attend the MDA summer camp.
Just last week, Elijah, who attends Central Elementary, helped filmed a commercial for 7-Eleven and is scheduled to be shown locally during the telethon. The MDA Telethon is slated for Sunday evening at 8 p.m. on ABC.
