Voters turned out on Tuesday for the primary election, resulting in victories for the two incumbents. However, the win for one incumbent was not by enough, and will now head to an August runoff.
In the race for Logan County Court Clerk, Cheryl Watts Smith emerged victorious against Jannis Crews Delisa with a commanding lead. Smith garnered 2,648 votes (78.27%), while Delisa received 735 votes (21.73%). Cheryl Watts Smith’s victory was comprehensive, winning all 30 precincts, as well as securing the majority in both the early voting period and absentee mail ballots.
Smith was appointed Court Clerk in 2016 and has since solidified her position with consecutive election wins in 2020 and now 2024.
The Logan County District 2 Commissioner race was notably closer. Incumbent Commissioner Charlie Meadows narrowly defeated Floyd Coffman with a mere nine-vote margin, obtaining 626 votes (40.36%) against Coffman’s 617 votes (39.78%). Mike Fergason finished third with 308 votes (19.86%).
Despite Meadows’ narrow victory, neither he nor Coffman secured the required 50% plus one vote threshold. Consequently, the two will face off again in a Primary Runoff Election scheduled for August 27.
Of the 11 precincts, Coffman won six while Meadows secured five. Coffman also led in absentee mail votes and early voting tallies. This contrasts with the special election held last June, where Meadows secured a more comfortable victory with 525 votes to Coffman’s 312.
Meadows once again gathered most of his votes from precincts in the southern portion of the county, while Coffman excelled in the north part of the district.
The Logan County Election Board will meet on Friday to certify the election results.
