Morgan, Roach help lead Jays to conference runner up finish

The Guthrie High School boy’s golf team competed in the Suburban Conference Tournament Thursday at John Conrad Regional Golf Course in Midwest City. The 18-hole event was contested under wet, cold and windy conditions and the scoring reflected it.

The Blue Jays fell just short of a conference championship by being edged out by Piedmont. The Wildcats, led by ORU commit and 2016 5A runner-up Dustin Hasley, by two shots 324 to 326.

The Top 10 individual places were awarded medals. Josh Gentry from Shawnee was the Conference medalist shooting a plus-four 76.  Guthrie’s Luke Morgan, playing as the number one bag, closed with an even-par back nine to finish with a plus-five 77 good enough for Conference runner-up. Bluejay Luke Roach, playing out of the number 4 slot, put together an excellent front nine, and then did enough on the back side to fire a plus-seven 79 and walk away with the fourth place medal.

Rounding out the scoring for Guthrie was Bo Robbins at 84, Jarrott Gates 86 and Luke Dale 92.

Although the young Bluejay squad came up painfully short, it is encouraging to note that they went toe-to-toe with some of the best teams and individuals 5A has to offer and nearly walked away in victory.

The Jays will have another chance to measure themselves against the best of the best as their next stop is Tuesday April 4 at Kickingbird hosted by Edmond Memorial, which will feature some of 6A’s top golfers.
