A social media threat targeting Guthrie High School, which began circulating on Snapchat on Wednesday, has been determined to be part of a nationwide hoax, according to the school district.
The post featured a picture of a restroom stall at the school with a written threat, which, along with others that surfaced Thursday, has been linked to a broader social media scare.
Statewide law enforcement agencies informed the Guthrie Police Department that the image circulating locally is identical to one originating in Georgia, which has been part of the ongoing hoax nationwide.
A second threat was reported at Guthrie Junior High on Thursday morning. Still, local law enforcement, according to the school district, has confirmed that both incidents are connected to the national hoax and that no credible threats exist at either school.
While initial reports suggest that local students may have participated in spreading the hoax, the investigation is ongoing. Authorities have found no evidence of weapons on either campus.
As a precautionary measure, the Guthrie Police Department has increased officer presence at the schools for the remainder of the day. The Logan County Sheriff’s Office has also been notified to provide additional support if necessary.
“We’re very thankful for the swift work of the Guthrie Police Department in keeping our students safe,” said Guthrie Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson. “We encourage parents to speak with their children about the importance of what they choose to share on social media.”
