North Georgia visits their coach’s home town of Guthrie

Day one of the NCAA Division II Softball Championship did not go as plan for Guthrie alum and North Georgia head coach Mike Davenport. His team will have a second shot of getting in the win column on Saturday, but on Friday morning the Nighthawks made a few special stops in Guthrie.

MIke-DavenportDavenport, a Guthrie High School graduate of 1987, and his 49-8 softball team got some swings in inside Guthrie Baseball’s hitting indoor facility. A facility that Davenport helped organize and arrange for indoor practices.

“This building was full of desks and other school supplies, but Coach (Gerald) Reed helped us get it cleaned out so we could have something indoors,” Davenport said as he overlooked the practice.

His players got to walk Squires Field to see where the coach called his home field in the mid 80’s.

“A lot of my coaching groundwork was laid at Squires Field and so many great friendships were made with past teammates and coaches. Guthrie will always be a special place for me, it’s where I fell in love with the game of baseball and has transferred into my softball coaching profession.”

The Nighthawks got back on their charter bus and headed to Stillwater for those famous cheese fries at Eskimo Joes. Afterwards, they headed over to Boone Pickens Stadium on the campus of Oklahoma State University for some cardio work.

North Georgia dropped their opening game 1-0 to Indianapolis, on Thursday, and will try to starve off elimination on Saturday (1 p.m.) at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium when they go up against St. Mary’s (Texas).

All games can be viewed online.
