DPS fatality report for the month of September

Department of Public Safety officials report a increase in traffic fatalities.  There were 69 fatalities
in September 2012 with a total of 58 in the same month last year.

There were eight motorcyclist and four pedestrians who died in crashes during September.  The highest daily fatality numbers include 16 deaths on Fridays, dropping to 13 on Thursdays.
There were three deathless days in the month of September.

Three of the fatality crashes were alcohol-related, in the opinion of the investigating state, county or municipal officer.  Fifty-two of the fatality victims were Oklahoma residents and 17 non-resident. There were 51 male and 17 female victims.

Six of the fatality victims were age 20 or under.  The leading number of fatalities by age group were in the 21-30 year-olds with 15, dropping to 12 in the 51 – 60 year olds.  Beaver and Oklahoma County led the state with a fatality count of seven, followed by, Pottawatomie and Tulsa County with five fatalities each.

The highest number of fatality crashes were 22 on State Highways,  followed by 15 fatalities on US Highways and County Roads.

Forty-five percent of those who died in traffic collisions were not wearing safety belts at the time of the crash, according to DPS statistics.
