OHP seeking driver in hit-and-run that caused serious crash; Guthrie family faces long recovery

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) is asking for the public’s help in locating a vehicle involved in a serious crash on State Highway 33 that left two Guthrie residents with life-altering injuries.

The collision occurred on July 27, at approximately 10:35 p.m., between Santa Fe Avenue and Western Avenue. Troopers say a pickup truck overturned after the driver swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle in his lane, preventing what could have been a head-on collision. The swerving caused both occupants to be ejected from the truck.

The other vehicle did not stop at the scene, and no witnesses have come forward.

A dash camera from another driver about three miles before the crash captured what may be the suspect vehicle — a white or silver single-cab Dodge pickup with fender flares, chrome steps, aftermarket wheels, and a red Oklahoma tag. Anyone with information is urged to call the Central Oklahoma Communications Center at 405-425-2323.

Weeks later, the victims, Edward Stevenson and his daughter Kaitlyn, continue to receive emergency care.

The Stevenson family says Edward sustained a spinal cord injury and underwent emergency neck stabilization and decompression surgery. He remains in the trauma ICU, on mechanical ventilation, and is undergoing aggressive therapy while doctors work to wean him from the ventilator. The family hopes to transfer him to Baylor Scott Neuro Inpatient Rehab in Dallas for specialized recovery.

Kaitlyn, who required several surgeries at OU Hospital, has been moved to inpatient rehab to regain her strength.

“The Stevenson family would like to thank this beautiful community for the outpouring of love, prayers, and generosity over the last two weeks,” the family said in a statement.

Multiple fundraisers have been held to support the lifelong Guthrie family as they face a long road ahead. The family is asking the public to keep Edward and Kaitlyn in their prayers — and to help identify the vehicle involved in the crash.
