OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma Department of Corrections is proud to introduce the first ODOC Inmate Games, a statewide event created to offer those in ODOC’s care a structured chance for healthy competition, teamwork and skill development. The event will begin on April 13, with teams competing across all 23 facilities in 19 events, along with a singing contest.
The competitions include athletic and physical activities, such as dashes and relays, pickleball, football skills, and tug-of-war, as well as strategy and recreational games, including trivia, spades, and dominoes. Events are designed to allow inmates of all abilities to participate. Participation is limited to inmates who meet eligibility criteria, including maintaining appropriate conduct and classification levels.
Recreational and organized activities are widely used in correctional systems to promote positive behavior, reduce tension within facilities, and encourage pro-social skills. The event offers those in ODOC’s care an opportunity to engage in healthy competition while boosting accountability, discipline, and teamwork.
“No agencywide inmate event has taken place since the OSP Prison Rodeo ended in 2009, which promoted camaraderie and encouraged positive behavior among the inmate population,” said ODOC Director Justin Farris. “What inmates enjoyed most about the rodeo was the competition between facilities. Hosting the ODOC Inmate Games brings that same spirit to our agency, just in a different form. I look forward to watching the tournament and ultimately crowning the champions.”
Each facility will host the events and advance the top three competitors to a regional competition. Regional winners will then compete for gold, silver, and bronze medals at Great Plains Correctional Center, where the singing competition winner will perform the National Anthem.
Maintaining the safety and security of our inmates and facilities is a top priority. All activities will take place under the supervision of correctional staff and in accordance with the facility’s normal security protocols. Teams from ODOC facilities across the state will participate, highlighting the agency’s commitment to accountability, discipline and rehabilitation through constructive and pro-social activities.
