Oklahoma State Department of Education seeks summer food sponsors for Child Nutrition Program

OKLAHOMA CITY  – The Oklahoma State Department of Education’s Child Nutrition Programs are currently seeking organizations to sponsor this year’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), which provides meals to children from underprivileged areas during summer educational or recreational programs. Training dates for sponsors are scheduled for April 13 and April 22.

Lack of proper nutrition during the summer months may set up a cycle of poor performance for Oklahoma children once the school year begins. The Summer Food Service Program provides nutritious meals at no charge to children during the summer when school is not in session, ensuring that every child returns to school in the fall ready to learn.

Eligible sponsors include public or private non-profit school food authorities (SFAs), public or private non-profit colleges or universities; private non-profit residential summer camps, units of local, county, municipal, State or Federal government; and any other private non-profit organizations.

Children ages 18 and younger are eligible to receive meals through SFSP, as well as students 19 years of age and older who have mental or physical disabilities (as determined by a state or local educational agency), who also participate in a public or private non-profit school program.

Underprivileged areas are defined as areas in which half of the children are eligible for free or reduced-price meals during the school year. Eligibility may also be determined by census information or on an individual basis.

This institution is an equal-opportunity provider.

To become a Summer Food Service Program sponsor and to register for sponsor training dates, contact Franza Schrader, Summer Food Service Program Coordinator, at (405) 522-4943 or [email protected].
