Guthrie head football coach Kelly Beeby did not hesitate in overtime.
On first down, David Vargas drilled a 27-yard field goal prevail the Jays in a 23-20 victory against Duncan in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs.
It was the Bluejays first playoff win since 2014 and overtime game since 2012.
In overtime, Duncan’s got the ball first. On third down, Duncan’s pass was batted up in the air and intercepted by Campbell Leach to set up Guthrie for the game winner by Vargas.
“He’s an outstanding kicker, we knew he could get us the win,” Beeby said in his post game radio interview.
Vargas started the scoring in the first quarter with a 25-yard field, but Duncan reeled off 10 straight points to take a 13-3 lead into the locker room.
Vargas, who has now connected on seven field goals this season, got the Jays back on the scoreboard. This time with a 42-yard field goal.
Guthrie trailed 13-6, but tied the game with 1:38 in the third quarter for the first Guthrie touchdown. Quarterbck Jackson Waddell found Marcellous Owens in the back of the end zone for a 5-yard score. The score was setup with a 39-yard pass between the same duo to the Duncan 8-yard line.
On the following possession, Guthrie regained the lead, 20-13, after Josh Rains ran in a 1-yard score to cap off a five play drive.
Less than five minutes later, Duncan tied the game with an 85-yard passing score.
On six plays and with 52 seconds on the game clock, Duncan drove the ball down to the Guthrie 20-yard line and setup a potential game winning field goal. However, Owens was able to get a hand on the ball to send the game to overtime.
Guthrie advances to the second round of the playoffs and travels to Collinsville (11-0), who had a much easier time in round one with a 41-7 home win over Ada.
